Risk parity began as an institutional allocation idea: give bonds, equities and commodities capital weights based on their volatility rather than their perceived importance. In trading terms the principle translates directly to strategies. A gold-scalping EA that routinely moves 5% a day and a grid EA that drifts 0.5% a day do not deserve equal capital — the scalper would dominate the equity curve. First, the estimates are backward-looking, so a strategy that has recently quietened will be sized up just as it becomes dangerous, and one that has been turbulent will be cut just as conditions settle.
