Starting automated trading is overwhelming and most beginners lose money in the first three months. This guide walks through the first six weeks, from understanding what an Expert Advisor actually does to running a live account at minimum viable size with a VPS. No shortcuts, no promises of easy money.

Week 1: Learn the Mechanics, Do Not Buy Anything

An Expert Advisor is a program that runs inside MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 or cTrader and executes trades based on programmed rules. It can open, modify and close positions automatically. Understanding what an EA does is the first step. The second step is installing MetaTrader, opening a demo account, and learning the interface. During week one, read the AlgoTM beginner track, watch the setup guides, and familiarise yourself with the terminal. Do not spend a single dollar on a product.

Weeks 2-3: Install a Free Product on Demo and Forward Test

AlgoTM offers free products that beginners can download and run on a demo account. Install one. Observe how it behaves under different market conditions. Forward test means running the EA on a demo account in real time, not relying on backtests provided by the vendor. Record your own results. Pay attention to drawdown, win rate, and how the EA handles news events and spread widening. This is the period where you learn what the strategy actually does, beyond the marketing description.

Week 4: The Decision Gate

After two to three weeks of forward testing, answer these questions honestly: Can you explain the strategy in two sentences? What was the worst drawdown you observed? What is your intended lot size relative to your account balance? Where will you place your stop-loss and what will stop you out of the account entirely? If you cannot answer all four, do not fund a live account. Continue testing.

Weeks 5-6: Live, Small, VPS, Journal

Fund a live account at the minimum viable size. Install a VPS so the EA runs 24 hours a day without your computer needing to be on. Keep a journal of every trade. Review weekly. Compare live results to your demo forward test. At the 60-day mark, decide whether the strategy meets your expectations. Only then consider a paid product with more advanced features.

Risk disclosure: Trading foreign exchange, commodities and CFDs carries a high level of risk and may result in the loss of your entire investment. Past performance, whether backtested, demo or live, is not indicative of future results.
