Position Size Calculator — Risk-Based Lot Sizing for Forex Traders
The position size calculator tells you exactly how many lots to trade based on your account balance, risk tolerance and stop-loss distance. Enter three numbers and the calculator does the rest. If you are trading a prop firm challenge, use the prop firm preset buttons to lock in challenge-compliant risk parameters. No guesswork, no blown accounts from oversized positions.
How the Position Size Calculator Works
Position sizing is the single most important risk management decision a trader makes. The formula is simple: divide your risk amount by the value of a one-pip move at one standard lot, then adjust for your stop-loss distance. The calculator handles standard lots, mini lots (0.1), micro lots (0.01) and nano lots, and supports custom pip values for indices, commodities and cryptocurrencies.
Who Should Use This Position Size Calculator
Every trader who places a stop-loss should size every position before opening a trade. This tool is for forex day traders, swing traders, gold and metals specialists, prop firm challenge participants, and funded traders who want to preserve their account. It works for MT4, MT5, cTrader and any platform that supports manual lot sizing. If you are new to automated trading, use this calculator alongside AlgoTM tools to ensure every automated strategy runs at the correct size.
Position Size Calculator Methodology
The calculator uses the standard forex position sizing formula: lots = (account balance x risk percentage) / (stop-loss pips x pip value). For USD-denominated pairs, one standard lot has a pip value of approximately $10. For XAUUSD gold, one standard lot has a pip value of approximately $1 (where a pip is $0.10 per 0.01 lot). For custom instruments, enter the pip value manually. The calculator does not account for spread, commission or slippage, which should be factored in separately. AlgoTM always recommends trading on a demo account first and never risking more than you can afford to lose.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the position size calculator work?
Enter your account balance, the percentage you are willing to risk per trade, and your stop-loss distance in pips. The calculator outputs the correct lot size so a stop-loss hit costs exactly the risk amount you specified, never more.
What risk percentage should a beginner use?
Most professional traders risk 0.5-2% per trade. Beginners should start at 0.5% on a demo account. Prop firm challenge rules often cap daily loss at 4-5% and total loss at 8-10%, so individual trade risk must stay well below those limits.
Does this calculator work for gold and indices?
Yes. For gold and metals, set the instrument to XAUUSD and the pip value is calculated automatically. For indices, use the custom pip value field. AlgoTM gold trading products include preset configurations for XAUUSD trading.
Why does stop-loss distance matter for position sizing?
A wider stop-loss means each pip of movement costs more, so the lot size must be smaller to keep the risk amount constant. A tighter stop allows a larger position, but may get stopped out by normal market noise.
